Unless you live inside a cave in Ras Al Khaimah or a basement in Dubai Marina, you would have seen that we have had a lot of sand blowing around this week. Whilst walking around the city, the high levels of airborne dust and sand can cause those with existing allergies to feel discomfort, and it is advised that you do not go out during the storm.
How Does it Affect Your AC System?
When buildings are built, there are always gaps in the façade. These gaps usually occur in holes in the building, sliding windows or balcony doors, or under the doorway, which allows air and dust to pass into your home. The composition of the dust in the UAE contains silica, which is a very fine and light dust, and so is transported very easily into the AC through these gaps.
Depending on the type of AC system you have, there will always be a filter installed inside the unit. In larger villas, it is usually a bag filter on the outdoor unit and a fan coil unit filter (usually an aluminium type). In most cases, the filter that is installed in your AC is the aluminium filter, as it is cheap and lasts for a very long time, yet it is not a very good filter. See below for the pictures.
During a sandstorm, sand is small enough to bypass the aluminium and hock hair filters, which are both commonly used.

1. Upgrade your filters!

2. Clean your ceiling
